Yesterday was Picnic Day at U.C. Davis, an all-campus open house, parade and party with a 100-year-or-so tradition. Diane volunteered to work at a Plant Science booth and Frankie was going to be there with the Cal Band, so we made a day of it and decided to take the dogs.
Did I mention it poured for a large portion of the day?
Spanky clearly didn't care. Idgie did give us those occasional "Don't you damn humans have enough sense to come in out of the rain?" looks. But it was fun, and they ride well and we all slept like the dead last night.
Haven't gotten a PG&E bill yet, but Diane is writing her column on our CFL switchover, so I did do a count and a little math: All in all, we replaced 54 bulbs with a total wattage of 3,155 with 54 bulbs with a total wattage of 658, a 79.1% decrease.
Another way to look at it, it's the equivalent of taking out every recessed bulb, every outdoor bulb, the overhead fixtures in Diane's office, the spare bedroom, both bathrooms and the garage door light.

Wow! That's a lot of stinkin' bulbs!
We finally got our gas bill. February they sent us an estimated bill, based on historical usage. It was 83 "therms" (whatever the heck a therm is). We just got the "corrected" bill for February AND March -- 90 therms TOTAL. We owed them an extra 2 bucks (that's for water, sewer & trash also). It was a good month!
Sounds like a great day with dogs & humans. Koji doesn't like the rain. Makes Oregon seem like an interesting choice, doesn't it?
I agree with Sonnjea! That is a lot of light bulbs! I've never bought enough bulbs for a WHOLE place! Seems like your savings will be worth it though! Have either of you had any problems with the quality of the bulbs? Dave and I still have not replaced the inside bulbs. Our electric bill is only $28 dollars ... and that is with the higher rate of the 100% green power option. The 2 of us just don't use much power.
Glad that you had fun at the picnic. Nice way to see Frankie too!
Oh, a co-worker of mine lent us the Fire Fly series on DVD. I now know where "and we will call it this land" and "shiny" come from! We've only watched the first 2-part episode, but are enjoying it!
Firefly is the best. I really wish it had lasted more than part of one season and Fox hadn't screwed with it so much it never found a home and an audience.
Who would have guessed we had so many bulbs? But in this house, a switch almost never turns on one bulb. The dining room fixture has five, living room fixture four. The recessed lights come on in sets of four, three or two.
One of the 14 recessed bulbs we got quit after two days, and one of the 17 decorative fixture bulbs died as quickly. I'm going to take both back (they have 5+ year warranties.) If our electric bill was $28, I wouldn'thave spent the $200 on bulbs. But with our bill ranging from $200 to $400, it seemed like a good investment. The numbers surprised the hell out of me though -- 3100 watts replaced with 650? That's crazy!
I've been replacing bulbs slowly.
Started with the outside lights and now have the front room (which is only 3 bulbs) and the office which is 4 bulbs done. So far no duds.
Sounds like a good rainy day was had by all.
